Morning Buzz Smoothie

I found myself looking longingly at the dredges of coffee in the pot the other morning. I wanted more coffee, God knows I needed it, but the heat of the day was already getting to me and the last thing I wanted was a hot cup of coffee. I was also hungry. Breakfast is hard for me to remember, even if I am hungry. It's the craziest part of the day. My two toddlers sit and repeat their breakfast orders like two grumpy parrots. "I want drink!" one croons. I quickly correct him for his lack of panache and manners, he asks again nicely, then without missing a beat, the other chimes in, "I want vita-mininin" (don't ask). I tell her, "Please, wait." Then my 10 month old, starts squawking for another teething cracker, the dog needs to go pee and to top it all off, Barney is singing his stupid songs and I absent-mindedly sing along! And on and on it goes until, everyone is fed, except for me and I'm nearly crawling along the floor, in search of food because my blood sugar is like, one.

So! I did finally get to making myself breakfast and drink that lingering coffee, all in one. It ended up being quite delish. But for the recipe, I changed adding hot coffee to a smoothie to using espresso powder instead, rendering a much less melty smoothie.

Morning Buzz Smoothie

3/4 c. milk or soy milk
3/4 c. crushed ice
2 tsp. instant espresso powder
1 scoop of your favorite protein powder (I use whey)
1/2 banana
1 tbls. peanut butter

Blend all together. Now, of course you could swap out whatever you like. But this does make for a heartier smoothie than most. Refreshing and zingy!

  3. Your post made me laugh out loud! Sounds like quite the crazy household :) I can relate to not wanting a hot cup of coffee, but not to the toddler scene, yet. Regardless, this smoothie looks like a great recipe! I love that it has a coffee kick to it. Great blog, Lauren!

  4. I have made a smoothie almost just like this before, just minus the peanut butter, and it is an awesome morning treat to get me going. Loved your post! :)

  5. I usually just get a Diet Coke when I want caffeine but not hot coffee, but this sounds so much more healthy. I'll have to try it. Thanks!

  6. Thank you guys! If I don't find humor in this journey of motherhood, I will be crabby and no fun for anyone. And actually, writing about those frustrating moments helps me relax...oh, but then I drink this and I'm all hyped up again, but at least I'm fed:)

  7. I'm with you on the early morning caffeine fix! Sometimes all you need is a little "me" time with the perfect cup of coffee... hot or cold either way coffee is all you need.

  8. OMG! That might as well have been me writing this post!!! I'm feeling ya girl! Got 4 needy...wonderful children myself, mornings are a true test of my patience for sure. ;-) What an absolutely wonderful idea for a breakfast treat! Love it. I'm not sure what espresso pwdr is, but I'll look for it next time I'm at the store. Do you think strongly brewed coffee would work???

  11. I'm so excited to see everyone lovin' the smoothie. Gwen- you could use coffee. I did that originally, but what happened was a runny smoothie and since I like mine a little thicker, I used the instant espresso. You can find it in the coffee aisle in your grocery. It's a pantry staple in my house, cuz my favorite chocolate chip cookies have it in them.

  12. Love this. Great addition to my morning rotation. There are times when I say to the kids, "You'll have to wait for more banana or daddy's going to have to lie down on the floor." I think your smoothie is fantastic.

  13. I will definitely have to try your smoothie. I don't particularly like cold coffee, but it just doesn't make sense when I am running around trying to get ready for work, shower, dress and blow-dry my hair, drinking hot coffee and sweating like a horse, lol! Stopping by after reading about the sunshine award at mangiabella!
