I've Got Questions...Bloggin' Etiquette

I know, crap picture, huh? Well, this is me when I wake up-smudgy mascara and wonky glasses. Poor kids, they have to stare at this all day. That has absolutely nothing to do with this post.

I have some questions. I have questions about blogging etiquette and I want your answers.

Here they are in no particular order:

1. How often do you subscribe to other blogger's comment forms on their blogs?

When you leave a comment on someone else's blog, do you sign-up to receive all comments that people leave on their blogs? I've done it a few times and it can be a bit annoying to continuously receive emails. I did, however, figure out how to unsubscribe to them. So that was good. I'd like to know how many of you do that. And if you do, why? Is it to see what others say to your comment, or the author's response? Is it to see if others share your same ideas? Simply curious about this.

2. Here's my big question: How do you respond to your reader's comments? Do you respond on your blog or go to theirs and respond?

Currently, I 've been going to their blogs to respond. I used to just respond on my blog but I never knew if they would see it, unless they subscribed. It's kinda like talking to a wall. At least when I visit their blog I, one, see their really cool posts, and two, know that they get my response. Now that I am doing it that way, I wonder if people think I am cruel and heartless, because they don't see me responding to my reader's comments on my blog. So, let me know this: What is the way you like to be responded to when you leave a comment on a blog? There.

Okay, that's it. Just a couple of things I've been thinkin' about for the last couple of days and who better to ask than you, my dear blogging buddies.

  1. I'm so glad someone has posted something on this, because I don't know! Sometimes I subscribe to comment, but usually I don't, because of the reasons you mentioned.

However, I usually do both for comments to my blog - visit my commenters' pages AND say a quick thanks on my blog, especially answering questions. But I often combine my thanks into one or two posts. I find myself following LOTS of blogs now because I'm so interested in what everyone has to say and share :)

I will be subscribing to comments now because I really want to see what others say!!

  2. I usually don't subscribe for notifications of followup comments. But I like to respond to comments on my own blog, just in case the commenters do. It also lets people reading know that I am interested in receiving comments and that I like to engage with them. In addition to replying on my own blog, I usually visit the commenter's blog and end up commenting on one of their posts. I think like attracts like, and that's why I end up interested in the blogs of people who visit my blog =) Interesting post!!

  3. That is so funny. I always think the same things as you. I just wing it. I try to answer on my blog and if they don't see it then it couldn't have mattered all that much. I feel to go to their blog and answer seems sorta out of context. Oh yeah, you don't have to answer this :--)

  4. I don't subscribe to reader comments but I do make a point to respond to reader comments as directly as possible - through their email address, Twitter or their blog. Hope this helps!

  5. I respond to actual questions on my blog - especially if it's info that I think others may want to know. Sometimes, I would respond both on the blog and to the individual's email directly. With the intense debate comment system that I use, you have the option to only subscribe to the answers to your question, rather than to all the comments so I know I lot of folks do that and it makes it a lot easier.

  6. You know I'm voting for you! I respond to readers by commenting on their own blog or by writing them a personal email. I assume that quite a few people don't check in with the blog post once they've commented, so I play it safe and respond in another way. And by the way...you look adorable in that picture. Glasses and all :-)

  8. ARGH! Just wrote a whole long response and then Blogger wouldn't let me post it. Anyhoo - like 5 Star, I try to answer specific questions on my blog itself if the answer would help others. Other than that, I try to return the favour of making comments on the blogs of anyone who made comments to me. I follow lots of blogs but I don't subscribe to the comment section, too confusing.
Hey, you don't look so bad in the mornings!

  9. I'm still trying to figure it all out myself!

But I have to say that it meant so much to me that you visited my blog and thanked me for the comments that I wrote on your blog. It made my day! :)

  10. I've never subscribed to reader comments, just because the blogs I usually comment on are ones I visit frequently anyway. And I have about 4 different email addresses plus Twitter & Facebook to keep track of, so that gets to be a lot of emails! I always respond to comments on my blog, just because it seems out of context to drop my answer back at the individual's blog. And it's more conversational. Nine times out of ten, though, I'll visit that individual's blog, and comment on one of their entries.

  11. I personally like to do what you do-- instead of responding on MY blog, I like to go to the other person's blog and respond on theirs. We all hope more people will read our blogs, right? It's a reciprocation thing. (Is that a word?) You read my blog, I'll read yours.

I uaually don't subscribe to comments because I get so much junk email already.

  12. I don't subscribe to reader comments. I'm like you in that I tend to respond to questions on the other person's blog, because I don't imagine that they subscribe to reader comments either. But I think I will start writing some reply comments on my own page to look engaged in the conversation.

  13. Great questions...I've been wondering the same myself.

  14. First of all, I love your posts like this! It's so great to see someone asking these questions that almost all of us have.

Regarding comment subscription, I used to do it a lot, just to see how the blog author responded to my comment. However, the constant e-mail updates got annoying, so now I only subscribe if I've made a specific comment or asked a question.

As far as responding to comments goes, I like both methods. When reading a blog, I like to see the author responding to their readers in the comment area, just because it feels like there's a personal interaction between the blogger and the readers. That being said, responding on the other person's blog is also a great way to do it. I think what really matters is just to make sure that your readers know that you appreciate them.

  15. I don't know what to do about replying to comments. I have the same problem. I want to just send them a quick response, but I either have to go back to their blog or hope that they see the response on my blog. There has to be a better way to easily do it.

It would be awesome if it was like Facebook and you could directly comment on someone's post or comment or even comment on a comment's comment. Wow! Too many comments in that sentence.

  16. I don't subscribe to comments, because as you said, I don't want my email box filling up with a bunch of stuff. Most the the replies have nothing to do with me anyway.

I do have my email available on both my blog, and on my Blogger account. I also get my comments sent to my email. If you do that, all you have to do is hit Reply and if that person has an email account attached to Their blogger account then you can reply to them via email and that reply never shows on your blog. That is my preferred method and I strongly urge all bloggers and blog readers/commenters to attach an email to their account. You can set up a special gmail account just for your blog if you don't want people to know your personal email address.

  17. Wow! this is great. It's nice to see that some of you were wondering the same stuff as me! Secondly, your suggestions are fabulous!

Miss M!- I really like your idea of making your email available. I have to check and see if I have that on my profile. Also, putting it on the blog is a great idea!

I guess it all comes down to our own individual preferences. I appreciate all your imput. It's interesting to see how others approach this issue and I'm going to try different things until I find what works.

Thanks everyone! I hope you've found this as informative as I have!

  18. i go to the people blog and respond as i am also not sure if they have subscribed to comments and then they may not get my reply - but i also sometimes leave quick comments on my own blog incase. I don't always reply to everything all the time but i try my best as often as possible.

thank you for your comment on my blog and for wanting to be part of the blog advertising exchange :)

  19. OK, so first of all your blog isn't showing up in my reader either. Weird. Missed this post.

    1) I subscribe to comments when I have a question for the blogger, and want to see if they answered. Though, as you said, it can be very annoying with all the e-mails.

I now just go back and read the post I asked a question on when the blogger makes a new post.

    2) I respond to questions on my blog, because I think people think like me hehe. Like Carolyn said, I mostly answer questions on my blog that may help others.

Great post, I've always wondered about the same thing.

  20. Its funny you post about this because I am always wondering where to leave comments. I feel like if I leave them on my blog people wont ever read them. On occasion I have emailed me if they ask a question, but most of the time I go to their blog and just comment on their newest dish!

Congrats on making it to the next round!!

  21. I like it when the person responds on my blog. It's like a common courtesy, I visit yours, you visit mine and it's always nice to receive comments. Plus, it's like you said, I don't always return back to see if the person commented on their own blog.

  22. i visit their blog to comment so i don't have to wonder if they didn't get it because they didn't revisit the same post :) - that is, when I catch up on responding to all my comments, right now, I am SERIOUSLY wayyyyy behind....i need a stunt double...too much to do and not enough me....

  23. Speaking as a blogging newbie: 1) I comment because I care. It's my way of showing the writer that thay have got my attention. 2) You are the first blogger I commented to who responded to me. I didn't ask a question, but you took the time to connect. 3) When I first read your blog, I noticed you "talked back" often. I thought that was very intimate and made good community-building sense. Could get cumbersome with many followers. 4) Even if you never comment or email or acknowledge others, I will enjoy reading your work. Please keep talking.
